Op 19 december 1858 verlaat Leendert Pieter na een verblijf van ruim zes jaar het Burgerweeshuis van Vlissingen.
Hij is nu 23 en scheepstimmerleerling op de Marinewerf, waar hij op 4 mei 1855 in dienst is getreden.
Op 28 februari 1863 wordt hij overgeplaatst naar de Marinewerf Willemsoord in Den Helder, wegens de concentratie van scheepsbouw en onderhoudsactiviteiten bij de Marine.
Op 3 maart wordt het paar, samen met een aantal andere families, per schip buitenom met huisraad en al overgebracht naar Den Helder.
