"Jaap Gomes is maandag 55 jaar lammerenmerker" werd ons verteld. Wij twijfelden want vierde de heer Gomes niet in 1953 zijn 35-jarig jubileum? Navraag bij de heer Gomes zelf verschafte zekerheid. "Als 12-jarige ben ik begonnen als hulpje van mijn vader en ik ben nu 67..." Er is dus feest op de eerste lammerenmarkt. Een merkwaardig jubileum is het want het beroep lammerenmerker is uiterst zeldzaam. Dat was het niet in de tijd dat Gomes begon. "Er waren toen wel vijftien merkers maar er waren ook veel meer lammeren op de markt. Ik weet nog dat er 11.000 werden aangevoerd. Die konden lang niet allemaal op de Groeneplaats; ook de Parkstraat, het park, de Hollebol en Nieuwstraat stonden vol hokken".
Tegenwoordig worden de meeste lammeren van het land verkocht, zodat Gomes het alleen afkan. Voor wie het niet weet: het merken is nodig om de lammeren van de verschillende kopers uit elkaar te kunnen houden. De merker werkt dan ook in opdracht van de handelaars. Het merken heeft ook nog een andere bedoeling: het geven van een uniforme kleur. De Texelse lammeren vertonen vrij sterke kleurverschillen, afhankelijk van de herkomst. De lammeren uit bijv. Ongeren zijn veel bruiner dan de hagelwitte dieren uit de omgeving van De Koog. Dat zit 'm in de grond. Als elk dier echter een streek van het bekende teerproduct op zijn wol krijgt en daarna in de veewagen wordt geladen waar hij urenlang tegen zijn soortgenoten wrijft, dan ontstaat de gewenste uniforme, iets gelige tint.
