Broodbakker Klaas Simonsz Kikkert [is benoemd tot lid van het Gemeentebestuur maar wil daar niet in plaatsnemen] daar hij grondig bekend met den moeyelijken en korseligen aard der bewoners van het Oudeschild en derzelver gedurige geest van tegenwerking des bestuurs, zich volkomen overtuigd hield, dat deze benoeming altoos hoogst nadeelig op zijn beroep zoude terugwerken en stellig hem bij de minste aanleiding een aanmerkelijk nadeel veroorzaken.
Ik ben dan ook niet in de mogelijkheid geweest denzelven in functie te doen treden.

15 December 1857. Des namiddags Cornelisje Nans Eelman bij mij laten komen. Zij bedroeft zich wel dat zij het Godsdienstonderwijs nu niet kan voortzetten, en op last van de Regenten van het Weeshuis (omdat zij van eene Gereformeerde moeder is) nu naar Dominee Vrendenberg moet gaan, doch zij zal zich getroosten om nu nog tot Juny a.s. te wachten, als wanneer zij toch het Huis moet verlaten en alzoo geheel vrij is, om dan vervolgens zich bij onze Gemeente te voegen.
Vervolgens komt Klaas Simonsz Kikkert als Praesident der Regenten van het Weeshuis om over die zaak te spreken. Ik zeide dat het wel wat naar gewetensdwang riekt om iemand, die bijkans 20 jaar oud is, te dwingen onderwijs te gaan nemen in de Godsdienst tegen haar zin. Hij zeide dat hij volgens het Reglement daartoe gehouden was. Dat Reglement was nu veranderd. Ik beklaagde het dat hier weder eene concessie aan Rome gedaan. Hij stemde het toe, en zeide dat de Burgemeester het nu ook inzag, en afkeurde wat hij eerst zoo goed gekeurd had.
