Notes about Gerrit Garritsen

Hij werd geboren te Buiksloot, waar zijn vader akkerbouwer was. Hij groeide op in Vijfhuizen.
Hij was, evenals alle Garritsen, dol op paarden. Hij werd daarom koetsier bij de Amsterdamsche Rijtuigmij.
Hij werd verhuizer. Hij woonde in kosthuizen in alle mogelijke plaatsen, oa. in IJmuiden.
Jarenlang verhuisde hij met paard en wagen naar Duitsland. Hij gold toen als een avontuurlijk figuur.
op 10 juli 1900 vestigde hij zich 'ambtshalve' in Velsen, ten huize van de familie Koster (de man was broodslijter). Op 30 apr. 1901 vertrok hij naar Amsterdam
Hij trouwde laat, in 1922, met Anna Maria de Koning. Samen hadden zij later een verhuurbedrijf van hadkarren in de Brouwerstraat 1. Ze waren een slordig en nonchalant stel.
Zijn nicht, Nel van der Kolk, was nogal vies van hen.
Het verdiende geld werd in een bloempot of emmer gemikt. Briefjes van 100 werden onder de matras opgeborgen.
De familie geneerde zich nogal voor hem. 'Wie verhuurt er nou handkarren?'
Anna werd ziek; hij kon haar tenslotte niet meer verzorgen en ze moest naar een rusthuis, een villa in de Hout
Ze hadden geen kinderen en een langstlevende testament. Dat betekende dat de familie aan de Garritsenkant niets en een neef van Anna alles zou erven.
De directrice van het rusthuis begon op de erfenis te azen. De familie heeft toen, samen met een notarisklerk, het hele rusthuis doorzocht. Het geld, onder de matrassen verstopt, bleek na de oorlog waardeloos te zijn. De neef van Anna vond het maar veiliger zijn tante zelf in huis te nemen. Hij verzorfde haar prima. Anna stierf in zijn huis in Haarlem. Hij erfde alles.
