Bron: Broer Berens uit het boek: "de eerste bewoners van Barger-compascuum" Jan Ottens, geboren op 17-4-1842 in Oomsberg, gem. Onstwedde, trouwde op 14-2-1871 te Erica met Catharina Sibum, geboren 19-12-1847 in Lindloh. De vader van Ottens kwam van Dankern. Er is geen burgerlijk huwelijk van te vinden. Vermoedelijk heeft de pastoor van Rütenbrock, waar dit huwelijk ook is opgeschreven, een trouwakte afgegeven. Ottens was toen scheper (schaapherder) in Compascuum. Ze hebben hier lang als landbouwers in het Voor-Compas gewoond en zijn later vertrokken naar Barger-Oosterveld. Jan Ottens overleed daar op 2-8-1915, zijn vrouw op 14-11-1926.
