JOHAN Hendrik and ELEONORE Elisabeth Horst-Schmülling had a total of 11 children. Henriette Eleonore is noted here because her son appears prominently in a family photo, in Chapter Three of the Family History, as 'Oom Daan Pietermaat' , with his cousins ROBERT Mac Gillavry ('Opa Bob', my father's grandfather) and Clara Juliana Mac Gillavry ('Tante Claartje'), and Robert's daughters LOUISE (my grandmother) and Rosalie.Translated from the Mac Gillavry history book: 'From Dunmaglass to Djati Roenggo':
By coach, the distance (from Djatiroenggo to Semarang) took about three hours. A four-person carriage was used, seating two by two facing each other, with the doachman and the stable boy on the box behind the span of four horses. In good weather the leather roof could stay open. In Europe such a conveyance was called a 'vigilante'. Other vehicles were known in the Indies as well, such as a bendy or 'deeleman' (one-horse open buggy) and in the city a dogkar (two-wheeled carriage) and a sado (dos à dos--the coachman and the passenger sat back-to-back). Midway, in Ungaran, the horses were changed, which gave the travellers the opportunity to stretch the legs a little and to enjoy some refreshment by family or friends. Practically all the White folks knew each other of course, because there were so few. Not quite one hundred. A small portion knew each other so well, that they were frequent mutual visitors. And so there were the two brothers Nagel of Toontje Mac Gillavry, the wife of the owner of Djati Roenggo. Their names were George and Frits. The latter was called Pee (pronounced 'payh') with the Arabic aspirate at the end of the word. Frits was unpronounceable to the Indies tongue. FARTHER DOWN COUSIN DAAN PIETERMAAT, NICKNAMED D.P., WAVING AT THE EDGE OF THE ROAD IN FRONT OF HIS LITTLE HOUSE, ALWAYS DRESSED IN PAJAMA BOTTOMS AND KABAJA (NATIVE JACKET). THE CHINESE BLOOD FROM HIS GREAT-GRANDMOTHER YU NI WAS STILL CLEARLY VISIBLE ON HIM. And finally the families who were friends, Monod de Froideville--Tante Roos, whose grand house had appropriately rose walls, Butin Bik and Schaap (into which Tante Elsa married).
