Sinds 1638 bekende buurt. De burgemeesters van Delft hadden een stuk land buiten de veste gekocht, nadat kooplieden gevraagd hadden om een speciaal stuk land dat voor de opslag van hout moest dienen. Enkele kooplieden hadden het stadsbestuur verzocht om een plek in te richten voor de opslag van zogenaamd ‘Noords hout’, naaldhout uit Scandinavië, Polen en Rusland. Tot dan toe mochten kooplieden soms hout opslaan in Delftshaven, maar het stadsbestuur beschouwde dat steeds meer als een bedreiging voor de economische activiteit van Delft zelf. Hierdoor kocht het Delftse stadsbestuur een strook buiten de vesten van Delft die de kooplieden mochten gebruiken als de houttuinen. Het woord was in twee delen op te splitsen. Hout stond voor de daadwerkelijke opslag en tuinen dient in de context als een omheining. De houttuinen lag op een locatie die zowel handel over land als over water goed mogelijk maakte.
