Bij turfgraven in het veen denken we vaak aan het wonen in plaggenhutten. Aan de Roder kant staat in Lieveren echter geen plag- of spitketen. Ze staan wel aan de Peizer kant van het veen, vooral in de

omgeving van de Streek. Er is ��n uitzondering.

In 1927 kopen Jan Aalders en Trientje van Veen voor driehonderd gulden een stuk heide en veen, waar nu de Oostvoortse weg ligt. Eerst leven ze in een plaggenhut die ze al snel ombouwen tot een houten

keet.

Jan is loswerkman van beroep en doet van alles, zoals klei graven in het Middelveen bij het Peizerdiep en zich verdienstelijk maken bij menig suikerbietencampagne. Hij steekt turf voor eigen gebruik e

n maakt nieuwe stukjes akker aan.

In de crisisjaren begint men met het gebruik van asfalt voor wegaanleg. Voor Jan en Trientje is dat een mogelijkheid om van hun zuur verdiend geld asfalt voor het dak van hun keet te kopen. Tot dan is

het dak in de zomer bedekt met een dun laken en een groot kleed als het kouder is.

Jan en Trientje Aalders krijgen in deze omstandigheden acht kinderen. Na noeste arbeid en karige verdiensten gelukt het Aalders in 1938 een stenen woning te bouwen naast hun keet. Deze keet fungeert n

adien als werkschuur. Inmiddels telt het gezin negen kinderen, die dan kunnen genieten van een warm en tochtvrij onderkomen.

In de oorlog moeten ze tijdelijk verkassen naar de woning �De Tip� aan de weg naar Langelo. De Duitsers houden schietoefeningen vanuit het Spierveen bij Langelo. De kogels fluiten levensgevaarlijk

om hun woning. Tegenwoordig is daar sinds 1974 op dezelfde plek een boomkwekerij van Barelds.
