De boerderij van Jans stond op de hoek Herendijk en Ericastraat richting Bargeroosterveld. Volgens de overlevering van verschillende mensen was hij schermmeester. Hij deed vervangende dienstplicht vanaf 12 mei 1891 bij het 5e regiment infanterie te Heerde Gld. Ook werkte hij rond de eeuwwisseling in Duitsland. Als koopman ging hij in 1923 failliet. Hij was tevens een groot verteller.
