      Op 2 juli 1859 monsterde hij, 17 jaar oud, als lichtmatroos op de bark "jan van Schaffelaar" onder kapitein L.G. Verbeek.
      Het schip vertrok op 14 juli met een lading van onder andere Edammerkaas, jenever en lucifers naar Australië.
      Van een aantal gebeurtenissen tijdens de reis -vooral de tijdens de heenreis- maakte Willem aantekeningen die hij, eenmaal thuisgekomen, overnam in een schrijfboekje
      Via de westkust van Afrika, Kaap de Goede Hoop en het eiland Saint Paulin de Indische Oceaan voer het schip naar Sydney. Dit was kennelijk een druk bevaren route. In Willem´s verhaal lezen we zelfs hoe een ander schip ternauwernood een aanvaring met de "Jan van Schaffelaar" wist te voorkomen.
      Tijdens een donkere en mistige nacht -zo schrijft hij- werd ´haast overzeilt een vol schip voor de boeg´ maar een ontstoken licht ´brandde zoo wel dat het schip ons zag en stuurde loef op´.
      Hij noteerde allerlei dingen die voor hem nieuw waren, zoals vliegende vissen en een walvis die ze zagen en twee Kaapse duifjes die ze langs de kust van zuidelijk Afrika vingen.
      Precies vijf maanden na het vertrek, op 14 december 1859, kwam het schip in Sydney aan. Terwijl ze in de haven van Sydney lagen stak er een hete storm op, zodat de schepen ´met zoo een verschrikkelijke vaart´ op elkaar werden geblazen ´dat de stukken er af vlogen´.
      Zeer onder de indruk was hij van de (toen al) spectaculaire jaarwisseling in Sydney, die gepaard ging met veel lawaai en ontstoken vuren.
      De "Jan van Schaffelaar" begon de terugreis op 5 maart 1860.
      De retourlading bestond onder andere uit zand, stenen en koeienhuiden.Deze reis begon met een heele rouwe nacht. Het was stikdonker en er ontlaadde zich een hevige onweersbui met zoodanige harde wind dat behalve de bezaansmast (de achterste van de drie) ook een man overboordsloeg. Iedereen was bang om schipbreuk te lijden.
      De laatste aantekening is van 18 maart en vermeldt veel regen, onweer en hoge zeeën. Het schip kwam gelukkig behouden thuis.
      Na terugkeer in Loosduinen ging Willem Lazarom werken in de smederij-stalhouderij van zijn vader, Gerrit Nederpel Lazarom(1812-1898). Willem stierf echter al op 3 juni 1887, slechts 45 jaar oud.
