      Volkstellers moesten informatie vastleggen over elke persoon die in het huishouden aanwezig was op de dag van de telling. Een volksteller kon een huis wellicht op een latere datum hebben bezocht, maar de informatie die werd verzameld werd geacht te gaan over de personen die op de dag van de telling in het huis aanwezig waren. De ingevulde formulieren werden verzonden naar het Commerce Department’s Census Office in Washington, D.C.Federale Volkstellingen waren meestal betrouwbaar, gebaseerd op de kennis van de informant en de zorg van de volksteller. De informatie kan aan een volksteller zijn verstrekt door een willekeurig gezinslid of door een buurman. Sommige informatie kan niet correct geweest zijn of met opzet vervalst.
