Amadeus III of Savoy (1095-1148) was Count of Savoy and Mau rienne from
1103until his death.
He was the son of Humbert II of Savoy and Gisela of Burgund y, daughter
ofWilliam I of Burgundy, and succeeded as coun t on the death of his father.Amadeus had a tendency to exa ggerate his titles, and also claimed to be Duke ofLombardy , Duke of Burgundy, Duke of Chablais, and vicar
of the Hol y RomanEmpire, the latter of which had been given to his f ather by Henry IV, HolyRoman Emperor.
He helped restore the Abbey of St. Maurice of Augane, in wh ich the former kingsof Burgundy had been crowned, and of w hich he himself was abbot until 1147. Healso founded the A bbey of St. Sulpicius in Bugey, Tamie Abbey in the Bauges ,and Hautecombe Abbey on the Lac du Bourget.
He had no children with his first wife Adelaide. In 1123 h e married Mahaut (orMafalda, or Matilda) of Albon, the sis ter of Guy IV of Dauphinois, with whom hehad 10 children:

In 1128, Amadeus extended his realm, known as the "Old Chab lais", by adding toit the region extending from the Arve t o the Dranse d'Abondance, which came tobe called the "Ne w Chablais" with its capital at St. Moritz. Despite his marriage to Mahaut, he still fought against his brother-in-la w Guy, who was killedat the Battle of Montmeillan. Followi ng
this, King Louis VI of France, marriedto Amadeus' siste r Adelaide de Maurienne, attempted to confiscate Savoy. Amadeus was saved by the intercession of Peter the Hermit, an d by his promise toparticipate in Louis' planned crusade.
In 1147, he accompanied his nephew Louis VII of France an d his wife Eleanor ofAquitaine on the Second Crusade. He f inanced his expedition with help from aloan from the Abbe y of St. Maurice. In his retinue were many barons from Savoy, including the lords of Faucigny, Seyssel, La Chambre, Mi olans, Montbel,Thoire, Montmayeur, Vienne, Viry, La Palude , Blonay, Chevron-Villette, Chignin,and Chatillon. Amadeu s travelled south through Italy to Brindisi, where hecross ed over to Durazzo, and marched east along the Via Egnati a to meet Louisat Constantinople in late
1147. After cross ing into Anatolia, Amadeus, who wasleading the vanguard, b ecame separated from Louis near Laodicea, and Louis'force s were
almost entirely destroyed.
Marching on to Adalia, Louis, Amadeus, and other barons dec ided to continue toAntioch by ship. On the journey, Amadeu s fell ill on Cyprus, and died atNicosia in April of 1148 . He was buried in the Church of St.
Croix in Nicosia.In S avoy, his son Humbert III succeeded him, under the regenc y of bishopAmadeus of Lausanne.
