Notes about François FAGEL

FAGEL (Mr. François), geboren te 's Gravenhage 11 September 1740, gedoopt Groote kerk 14 September; overleden te 's Gravenhage 28 Augustus 1773, begraven Groote kerk 2 September; zoon van Mr. Hendrik en van Catharina Anna Sluysken.
Reeds in zijn kinderjaren gaf hij aanleiding groote verwachtingen van hem te koesteren; smaak voor het ware, schoone en goede, gepaard aan een ongewone leergierigheid waren reeds vroeg kenmerkende eigenschappen van hem. Op den jeugdigen leeftijd van veertien jaar toegelaten tot de academie te Leiden, werd hij daar 17 September 1754 in het studentenalbum ingeschreven, terwijl hem als leidsman de beroemde en geleerde François Hemsterhuis, de vriend van Ruhnkenius, werd toegevoegd. Professor David Ruhnkenius zelf was zijn leermeester op het gebied der letteren en onder dezen, mede onder leiding van zijn ‘ephorus’ maakte Fagel zulke goede vorderingen, dat hij het latijn en grieksch niet alleen grondig verstond, sprak en schreef, doch ook de schoonheid der oude schrijvers ten volle kon genieten. Als zijn lievelingsauteurs worden genoemd Xenophon en Tacitus, doch ook Homerus, Theocritus en Horatius deelden in zijn genegenheid. Zijn hoofdstudie echter, waarvoor hij de academie bezocht, was de rechtsgeleerdheid en nadat hij zijn graad van meester in de rechten had behaald, na verdediging, 23 Juli 1759, van een diss. de Guarantia Foederum, verliet hij de hoogeschool. Hemsterhuis bleef met Fagel bevriend, óók Ruhnkenius. De eerste droeg hem zijn Lettre sur l'homme et ses rapports - de laatste (in 1786) zijn Rutibus Lupus op. Na de voltooiing zijner studiën vertrok Fagel naar Lausanne, bereisde daarna Zwitserland, Italië, Frankrijk en Engeland en zette zich in zijn geboorteplaats metterwoon neder, waar hij 11 Maart 1767 als ‘second griffier’ aan zijn vader werd toegevoegd.
Hij was een man van zeldzame talenten, een sieraad van zijn geslacht en voorzien van alle eigenschappen om een uitstekend diplomaat te worden. had niet de dood hem in den bloei des levens weggerukt.
Fagel huwde te Velsen 15 April 1764 met Anna Maria Boreel, geboren te Amsterdam 26 November 1739, overleden te Pyrmont 16 Juli 1781, dochter van Mr. Jacob en van Agneta Margaretha Munter. Uit dit huwelijk sproten zeven kinderen, waarvan de vijf zoons allen op hun naam in dit deel (kol. 389-394) voorkomen. De twee dochters waren jkvr. Agnes Margaretha gehuwd met Diederik Jacob baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken, den russischen gezant te Washington, en jkvr. Catharina Anna, echtgenoote van den luitenant-generaal jhr. Willem François Boreel.
