Notes about Baudouin III ""Baudouin le Jeune"" de Flandre

Baudouin III de Flandre, dit Baudouin le Jeune (° v. 940 - † Bergues-St-Winoc, 1er janvier 9621). Fils du comte Arnoul Ier et d'Adèle de Vermandois († 960). Comte de Flandre de 958 à 962.

Son père lui fait épouser Mathilde de Saxe, fille du duc Hermann Ier de Saxe et de Hildegarde de Westburg. En 958, il lui remet à Gand le gouvernement de la Flandre.

Baudouin III institue les premières foires à Bruges, Torhout, Courtrai et Cassel, fonde des manufactures et fortifie Bergues. Il prend part à une expédition contre les Normands sous l’autorité du roi de France, Lothaire, mais meurt, à son retour, de la petite vérole (962), laissant un fils encore enfant (Arnould II), ce qui contraint Arnoul Ier (père de Baudouin III) à reprendre les rênes du pouvoir.
