Note: Carlos Gonzalez Auzon [Pers.com. 6-8-2020] comments: " An article in a pseudo scientific magazine was published on this event, with a lot of false and unchecked information about what really happened. The background is the following: Eduardo Schiaffino was the founder of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts) here in Buenos Aires. Therefore he is sort of a hero, perhaps well-deserved, for creating what latter would become one of the biggest and prestigious art collections in Latin America. This is similar to what happens with a country’s national heroes. They are usually perceived as saints, immaculate perfect beings, without errors or vices. This work projected Maximilian like the liberal, sepoy antihero, who despised the country and wanted to deny its essence or existence, handling it over foreign powers. The same happened to all of his generation, mostly attacked from the authoritarian left (Communist party) and the authoritarian right (Peronismo). Both sides are sort of “extreme nationalists” here, so they hate everything European, North American, and so on. So this nationalistic investigator published this paper with unchecked or straightly false information. Then Rafael Spregelburd (one of the most intelligent and educated guys I’ve known of in the artistic and cultural argentinian sphere) wrote a theatrical work and played it, representing the nationalistic and europeanist views, always in conflict in my country, both characters in a monolog named “‘Apátrida”, and very well-received by the critic https://www.lanacion.com.ar/espectaculos/teatro/apatrida-nid1476467/amp."
