He studied law from 1747-1748 at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He arrived in South Africa on 21st April, 1751 on the ship Schackenbosch as a soldier. He obtained the farm Plattekloof, on the Duyvenhoksrivier, Cape, South Africa. He later became onder landros in Swellendam, Cape between 1754 and 1760. He became a citizen in 1767
