Na aldaar de HBS met vijfjarige cursus te hebben doorlopen en van 1919 tot 1920 aan de Gemeente-Universiteit te hebben gestudeerd in de Wis- en Sterrenkunde, werd hij op 16 September 1920 bij de Koninklijke Militaire Academie te Breda benoemd tot cadet bij het wapen de artillerie. In 1923 werd hij bevorderd tot 2e Luitenant en in 1927 tot 1e Luitenant. Hij werd bevorderd tot Kapitein in 1938 en tot tijdelijk-majoor per 2 October 1945, tot majoor in 1947 en tot tijdelijk Luitenant-kolonel bij de Militair Juridische Dienst, per 1 Maart 1948, tot reserve Luitenant-kolonel in November 1948, tot reserve Kolonel in 1953. Hij werd in 1949 op zijn verzoek eervol ontslagen als officier. Hij werd in 1962 bevorderd tot reserve Brigade-Generaal titulair. Hij werd op 11 Mei 1942 door de bezetter krijgsgevangen gemaakt en afgevoerd naar de krijgsgevangenkampen te Stanislau en (in Januari 1944) Neu-Brandenburg waar hij op 28 April 1945 door de Sovjet-Russische troepen bevrijd werd. In 1946 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van de Militair Juridische dienst te 's Gravenhage en in 1948 tot (burger)-president van de Krijgsraad voor de Landmacht te Arnhem, tevens president van de Krijgsraad te Velde Oost.
    Op 7 Augustus 1926 deed hij aanvullend staatsexamen tot toelating tot de studie aan een Universiteit, vervolgens te Leiden op 8 Maart 1929 het candidaatsexamen en op 21 November 1932 het doctoraalexamen in de rechtsgeleerdheid. Op 28 April 1942 behaalde hij het diploma wetenschappelijk archiefambtenaar der 2e klasse. Hij had de bevoegdheid tot het afnemen van onderdelen van dit examen tijdens zijn krijgsgevangenschap in Duitsland en Polen en nam als zodanig diverse examens af van collega officieren, examens die later in Nederland konden worden omgezet in het diploma.
    In 1950 werd hij benoemd tot privaat docent in het militaire straf- en tuchtrecht aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden en in 1956 tot lector in het zelfde vak aan de Gemeentelijke Universiteit van Amsterdam waar hij in 1971 werd benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar. Hij was lid van het Hoog Militair Gerechtshof en raadsheer-plaatsvervanger bij het Gerechtshof in Arnhem. In 1957 promoveerde hij cum laude in Amsterdam tot doctor in de rechtsgeleerdheid. Zijn leeropdracht in Amsterdam werd in 1960 uitgebreid met de vakken strafrecht en strafvordering (commuun). Hij overleed op 5 juli 1972 te Goslar (Dld.)
