Het verhaal gaat dat Nell tijdens haar reis naar Paramaribo een verhouding kreeg met de stuurman van de "SS Cottica".
John Robert was toen tweede stuurman op het schip ( zie afb. JRdeBock) de maatschappij KNSM wilde hem ontslaan als hij niet zou trouwen met haar, in die tijd waren dergelijke relaties aan boord absoluut verboden.

Tijdens zijn opleiding wordt genoemd Johannes Baukes Feenstra als toeziend voogd hij is de man van Jantje de Bock de zus van zijn vader.

In het Militieregister staat bij 21 april 1920 dat hij wordt vrijgesteld van dienst als reden wordt opgegeven dat hij kostwinnaar is
1930 's Gravenhage geslaagd voor eerste stuurman grote vaart

Hij was Drs in de wiskunde. Gewoond oa Zeestraat 183 Beverwijk
In het adresboek Beverwijk 1947 staat vermeld "beambte Centr. Beh."
