Als zijn vrouw Femmetje (1920) komt te overlijden blijft hij achter met vier kinderen in de leeftijden 10, 9, 6 en 2 jaar

In het bestand BesanqonF Regeling voogdij over de kinderen.
9 februari 1922 gelet op een beschikking van de rechtbank verklaart Jean dat hij zich niet verzet tegen de ontheffing van de voogdij over Jean, Dirkje en Elisabeth. De voogdij wordt overgedragen aan het Waalse weeshuis te Amsterdam. Tevens moet Jean rekening en verantwoording van zijn beheer doen aan het weeshuis. En moet hij wekelijks tien gulden betalen voor het onderhoud en de opvoeding van deze drie kinderen. De jongste dochter Martha wordt hier niet genoemd.

9 februari 1928 is er weer een zitting van de Arrondisements-Rechtbank wordt hij ook ontheven uit de voogdij van Martha. Blijkelijk heeft hij dus wel de voogdij gehouden van Martha, bij de vorige rechtzitting was zij pas 4 jaar. Als Martha dus 10 jaar is komt zij dus ook onder het gezag van het Waalse weeshuis. Ook tijdens deze zitting wordt Jean verplicht om rekening en verantwoording van zijn beheer doen aan het weeshuis. En moet hij wekelijks twee gulden betalen voor het onderhoud en de opvoeding van Martha.
