Notes about Isaac Hurgronje

Isaac Hurgronje kwam te Vlissingen op het kantoor van de heeren Lampsins en wist al spoedig door zijn schranderheid en werkzaamheid daar op te klimmen.
In de commissievaart viel in die dagen heel wat te verdienen. Hij bracht het zelf zeer spoedig zoover dat hij eigen zaken kon gaan doen als zelfstandig koopman.
Hij werd raad, burgemeester en schepen van Vlissingen, bewindhebber der O.I. Comp., vendumeester, ter admiraliteit. Dat hij door zijn buitengewone werkkracht en
scherpzinnigheid zoo snel opklom, werd met afgunst en nijd door velen waargenomen.

Vendumeesters
De veiling (vendu) vindt in Zeeland bij opbod plaats. In Zeeland zijn sinds 1584 twee vendumeesters in dienst, één voor Veere en één voor de rest van Walcheren. Na 1653 zijn er vier vendumeesters aangesteld: in Zierikzee, Veere, Middelburg en Vlissingen. Middelburg is de belangrijkste vendu.

Er is ook een keerzijde aan de de medaille Hurgronje fraudeerde tijdens de Negenjarige- en Spaanse Successieoorlog met honderdduizenden guldens aan buitgeld.
