Notes about Johan van Oldenbarnevelt

Van Oldenbarnevelts vader, Gerrit van Oudenbarnevelt (Gerretgen Sleght),[Slecht in de betekenis van onnozel, eenvoudig] was koopman en sekwester. Hij stond niet zo goed bekend; hij dronk en werd verschillende keren voor het gerecht gedaagd. De familie was niet van adellijke afkomst.

Johans oudste broer Reyer was hopman in het Staatse leger en werd vaak in ongunstige zin genoemd. Hij had vier zussen van wie er twee volgens niet erg betrouwbare pamfletten van de prostitutie leefden.
Aan de andere kant maakte zijn jongere broer Elias zich verdienstelijk als pensionaris van Rotterdam.
Johan groeide op in het huis Bollenburg (Muurhuizen 17-19 te Amersfoort). Waarschijnlijk ging hij in Amersfoort naar de Latijnse school (nu het Johan van Oldenbarnevelt Stedelijk Gymnasium).

Hij erfde op jeugdige leeftijd goederen van de familie van zijn moeder, Deliana van Weede, wat hem onafhankelijk maakte van zijn vader.
In 1564 vertrok hij naar Den Haag om bij een advocaat te werken.

In de volgende jaren studeerde hij rechten in Leuven (1566), Bourges (1566-67), Keulen (1567), Heidelberg (1568) en Padua (1569).
In Leuven wijzigde hij zijn naam Oudenbarnevelt in Oldenbarnevelt.
Tijdens zijn verblijf in Heidelberg koos hij voor het calvinisme. In 1570 keerde hij terug van zijn studiereis
