Notes about Marguerite van Egmond

Margaretha van Egmont, duchess of Mercoeur was the daughter of Count Jean IV of Egmont and his wife Françoise of Luxembourg. Her paternal grandparents were Jan van Egmont, first Count of Egmont, and Magdalene van Waerdenburg. Lamoraal van Egmont, Prince of Gavere and Count of Egmont, was her brother.

Margaretha married Nicolas de Lorraine, Duke of Mercoeur on 1 May 1549 in Brussels. The couple had four children, but only their daughter Louise survived infancy: she became the wife of Henri III and Queen of France.

Margaretha died in 1654, less than one year after Louise's birth. Her husband remarried twice and had numerous children.
