Notes about Reinerus Corten

De overleveringen spreken van een bepaald persoon als bestrijder van de Bokkenrijders, namelijk Reinier Corten, die in 1706 te Lutterade in de Geenstraat woonde met zijn moeder en andere familieleden. Hij werd secretaris van de schepenbanken van Oirsbeek, Geleen, Amstenrade en Brunssum. Daarna werd hij rentmeester van de prins de Ligne en woonde in die functie op kasteel Amstenrade en sinds 1748 was hij drossaard van de graafschappen Geleen en Amstenrade, terwijl zijn broer als landsontvanger van Spaans (Oostenrijks) Valkenburg op huize Oensel onder Beek woonde.

Reinier verdiende goed in die ambten, want hij kon voor 16.000 gulden, voor de tijd van twintig jaar, het graafschap Geleen in pand krijgen.

Om zich op deze drossaard te wreken wegens de terechtstelling van twee Bokkenrijders zouden de zusters van de veroordeelden zijn ouderlijk huis te Lutterade in brand hebben gestoken. Dat huis werd in 1751 herbouwd en bewoond door drie zusters van Reinier Corten, zodat men een eeuw later nog sprak van ‘bij de Juffrouwen’, hoewel minstens een van hen gehuwd was
