Noot:De afkomst van Stephania is onderwerp van intensief debat. Traditioneel wordt ze gezien als een dochter van Adalbert van Lotharingen en Clemencia van Foix, maar inmiddels is vastgesteld dat dit is gebaseerd op een verkeerde interpretatie van middeleeuwse teksten. Andere ouders die worden genoemd zijn Bernard II van Bigorre gehuwd met Clemancia van Barcelona, of Berengarius Raymond I van Barcelona. Maar ook daarvoor zijn geen directe aanwijzingen. Daarnaast is ook bekend dat Stephania's zoon, paus Calixtus II, heeft geschreven dat zijn moeder een verwante van keizer Hendrik IV was.
