Notes about Maria van Hannover

Prinzessin Maria von Hannover (* 22. Februarjul./ 5. März 1723greg. in London (Leicester House); † 14. Januar 1772 in Hanau) war Landgräfin von Hessen-Kassel.

Sie war eine Tochter von König Georg II. von Großbritannien (1683–1760) und dessen Gattin, Markgräfin Caroline von Brandenburg-Ansbach (1683–1737).

Am 28. Juni 1740 heiratete sie in Kassel den Landgrafen Friedrich II. von Hessen-Kassel. Mit ihm hatte sie folgende Kinder:

Wilhelm I. (1743–1821)
Karl (1744–1836)
Friedrich (1747–1837)
Als 1754 bekannt wurde, dass der Erbprinz, Landgraf Friedrich II. zum katholischen Glauben konvertiert war, wurde die Ehe getrennt, jedoch nicht geschieden, um eine Wiederheirat Friedrichs zu verhindern. Maria wurde mit den drei Söhnen aus dem Einflussbereich Friedrichs entfernt, sie zog nach dem Siebenjährigen Krieg in die Grafschaft Hanau.

1736 starb mit Johann Reinhard III. der letzte männliche Vertreter des Hanauer Grafenhauses. Aufgrund des Erbvertrags von 1643 fiel der Hanau-Münzenberger Landesteil an Hessen-Kassel. Der Schwiegervater von Landgräfin Maria, Landgraf Wilhelm VIII. von Hessen-Kassel, übertrug, um seinen Sohn für die Konversion abzustrafen, so viel wie möglich von seinem Erbe direkt auf den Enkel, Wilhelm (IX./I.). Dazu zählte auch die Grafschaft Hanau. Für die Zeit von dessen Minderjährigkeit bestellte Wilhelm VIII. Maria als Vormund. Landgräfin Maria regierte so für ihren Sohn, Wilhelm (IX./I.), vormundschaftlich von 1760 bis 1764 die Grafschaft Hanau.

Ihre letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte sie im Rumpenheimer Schloss. Sie liegt in der Gruft der Marienkirche in Hanau begraben.
