Zijn vader Jan Huijbert Smarius, woonachtig in Goirle, beloofde in 1770 aan zijn zoon Willem, theologant die "met de gratie Gods als weerelds priester van zin en voornemens is den geestelijken staat te aanvaarden" , jaarlijks honderdvijftig gulden uit te keeren.
Hij studeerde te Douay en was daarna 17 jaar kapelaan in Udenhout. Daar woonde hij eerst zelfstandig onder pastoor Watrin. Onder diens opvolger pastoor Van den Boome woonde hij op de pastorie. Hij kreeg in 1793 zijn aanstelling als pastoor van Breugel en werd als zodanig op 11 september 1795 door deken van Gastel van Eindhoven ingeleid. In 1804 kregen de Breugelse katholieken hun inmiddels vervallen parochiekerk terug van de protestanten. Daar droeg Willem op 6 september voor de eerste keer sinds 1648 weer het H. Misoffer op. Vanaf 1820 stonden assistenten de hoogbejaarde pastoor bij. Hij overleed op 80-jarige leeftijd te Hechtel (B) in de pastorie van zijn neef Hubertus Ockels die daar toen pastoor was.
In 1787 deelde Willem mee in de erfenis van zijn ouders. Hij erfde een huis met erf etc. en percelen bouw- en wijdegrond in de Stokhasselt in Tilburg.
