Notes about Hélène Mimi Wolff

Hélène Wolff was onderwijzeres en schilderes. Na het overlijden van haar welgestelde vader Eduard Willem Wolff in 1930 liet zij in Bussum aan de Isaac da Costalaan 14 een villa met atelier bouwen. Op 25 januari 1943 verhuisde zij vanwege maatregelen van de Duitse bezetter naar de Rubensstraat 75 in Amsterdam. Daar verbleef zij bij de familie Meijers tot zij op 20 mei 1943 samen met andere gedoopte joden naar kamp Westerbork werd gedeporteerd.

Als gedoopte Jodin vertrekt zij op 4 september 1944 samen met ongeveer 2100 mannen, vrouwen en kinderen (onder wie ca 500 gedoopte Joden) naar Theresienstadt, het zevende transport van kamp Westerbork naar de voormalige vestingstad en kazerne bij Praag. Door de inzet van Recha Sternbuch (1905-1971), een Zwitserse Orthodoxe Joodse activiste, werd een akkoord bereikt met Heinrich Himmler, die bereid was om Joden uit willekeurige concentratiekampen vrij te laten in ruil voor 1 miljoen dollar. Op 7 februari 1945 werden de eerste 1210 gevangenen (onder wie een 150 gedoopte Joden) vanuit Theresienstadt naar Zwitserland overgebracht en meer transporten zouden volgen. Dat laatste is nooit gebeurd, beweerd wordt dat Hitler zelf dit heeft voorkomen. Die 1 miljoen dollar is ook nooit uitbetaald overigens.

Een van die 1210 gevangenen die via Zwitserland naar hun vaderland kon worden gerepatrieerd was Hélène Mimi Wolff.
