Ruim tachtig jaar, tussen 1892 tot 1973, dreven de Zusters van de Goede Herder op het Landgoed Larenstein aan de rand rand van Velp een internaat waar duizenden meisjes (in 1932 woonden er bijvoorbeeld maar liefst 335 in getal) onder de mooie vlag van de Goede Herder onder een onbarmhartig regime werden 'opgevoed'. In het 'liefdesgesticht' vonden twee groepen meisjes onderdak. 'Gevallen meisjes' die in aanraking waren geweest met justitie of een buitenechtelijk kind hadden gekregen, moeilijk opvoedbare meisjes en weesmeisjes van katholieke huize. Tot welke categorie Maria Louise behoorde is (vooralsnog) niet bekend. Op het moment dat zij daar geplaatst werd op 15 februari 1911 was zij halfwees.
