"Door aankoop van een blok huizen aan de Helling met de daarvoor liggende scheepmakerij van den
ouden heer Fritsel en de daarachter gelegen hoveniersplaats in 1847 werd mijn eigendom vergroot en
na den dood van mijn ouden concurrent wed. P. van Vlissingen kocht ik in publieke veiling zijne
kalkmagazijnen gelegen aan de Vecht (roode brug), die ik de naam van ,,de Noord" gaf en strekte ik
daardoor mijn vleugels uit van het Noorden naar het Zuiden, terwijl ik een deel dier magazijnen op
de gekochte scheepstimmerwerf deed overbrengen en deze voor tüfsteenbergplaatsen bestemde.
Middelerwijl stierf den reeds hoog bejaarden kassier Jan Kol, waardoor zijn protégé D. Sigal, die aan
de Dedemsvaart eene kalkbranderij bezat en exploiteerde, aan het wankelen kwam, en welke
branderij met eenige veengrond door mij later van hem werden aangekocht. Hierdoor had ik het gehele
terrein langzamerhand vrij gevochten, zoowel in het Noorden als in het Zuiden, mijn concurrenten
bezijdigd en de zaken gingen daardoor beter en gemakkelijker."
