"... William Saundre evidently was the firstborn son of Thomas and Joanna Saundre. He was born about 1415, and no doubt lived his early years at Charlwood Place (Bull Head Farm) in Charlwood. We suppose William had an upbringing of some modest personal ease and social standing, as his father possessed land freely and had gained such wealth as was possible for yeomen of the time. But nothing specific is known about William until the time of his marriage.

At about age twenty-three, William married Joan Carew of Beddington Manor in the north of Surrey. As Carew's Beddington Manor lay adjacent to Sanderstead in Wallinglon Hundred in northern Surrey, the Saundres (i.e., the de Sandersteads) and Carews certainly were not strangers, having been neighbors for generations. ...

With Thomas Saundre, yeoman, amassing what he could of personal wealth and William marrying well and gaining the title of gentleman, a new Saundre family of Charlwood began to find its way into prominence. William and Joan were married about 1437, when he was twenty-three and she fifteen, a not unusually early age for marriage at the time. They probably lived at Charlwood after the marriage as William was heir to the property upon his father's death around 1450 or shortly thereafter. By about 1438, the first of their many children were born. ...
