Il y a été « gazé » et s’est retrouvé soigné en Angleterre, d’où il est revenu au combat en ayant perdu toutes ses dents, grâce aux gaz « moutarde » utilisés par les Allemands.
Il a continué le combat et repoussé l’ennemi jusqu’aux frontières de ce qu’on appelle aujourd’hui, « La région germanophone »â€¦
Il a reçu la Médaille du Mérite, la Croix du feu, la Légion d’Honneur, a été nommé Chevalier de l’Ordre de Léopold et a reçu de nombreuses médailles qu’il ne portait pas, car il disait que les montrer pouvait donner de mauvaises idées à la jeunesse et que cela n’en valait pas la peine.
