"Aus Zwoll gebürtig, auf den heimathlichen Universitäten und in Frankreich gebildet, wurde er (1509-10) in Rostock mit Ulrich v. Hutten bekannt, welcher ihn in seinem sechsten Tetrastichon als Gelehrten und Zierde seines Amtes preist. In der Folge von Herzog Bogislaw IX. von Pommern als fürstlicher Rath nach Stettin berufen, bewährte er die ihm von dem Dichter gespendeten Lobsprüche in dem Grade, daß es dem Herzoge wünschenswerth erschien, ihn, als Nachfolger des berühmten Petrus von Ravenna (s. d. Art.), zum Ordinarius der Juristenfacultät in Greifswald zu ernennen, umsomehr als M. demselben auch an Vielseitigkeit ähnlich und nicht nur in beiden Rechten, sondern auch in der Artistenfacultät promovirt war. Am 2. Januar 1514, unter dem Rectorate des Abtes Enwaldus Schinkel von Eldena, von der Universität aufgenommen, führte er (1514-16) wiederholt das Rectorat und hatte vielleicht auch darauf Einfluß, daß Bogislaw X., um dieselbe Zeit, zur Hebung der humanistischen Studien, seinen Landesgenossen Joh. Luwens aus Hasselt bei Utrecht, sowie ferner den berühmten Dichter Joh. Hadus aus Bremen (Bd. X, S. 307) und die beiden Mecklenburger Peter und Georg Gruel (Bd. X, S. 5) in die Artistenfacultät berief. Auch für die Uebersiedelung des mit Hutten und Hermann v. d. Busche befreundeten Humanisten Joh. Sunnenberg (Helioreus) von Rostock nach Greifswald (1516) mochte er gewirkt haben, jedoch hatte dieselbe wenig Erfolg, da Sunnenberg schon am 12. September 1516 starb. Desto wichtiger war die von M. vollzogene Promotion der Juristen Heinrich Bukow jun. aus Greifswald, Johann Otto aus Stettin (1515) und Johann Oldendorp aus Hamburg (1518), welche als vieljährige Lehrer an der Hochschule thätig waren und von denen der letzte zu ihren namhaftesten Mitgliedern gehört. Nachdem er sich (1518) mit der Wittwe von Joachim Stevelin aus einer alten Greifswalder Familie vermählt hatte, starb er am 18. August 1521 auf einer Reise nach Stralsund und erhielt J. Oldendorp als Nachfolger." (ADB, Band 22 (1885), S. 488-489)
