Bernard Pels studeerde voor akoestisch ingenieur in Delft, en na een gedwongen passage in Berlijn tijdens WOII ging hij bij zijn vader in de Alkmaarse "orgelfabriek" werken. Hij huwde in 1949 met Cecile D’Hondt, de dochter van de Herseltse orgelmaker Gerard D’Hondt. In 1962 nam Bernard Pels het atelier van zijn schoonvader in Herselt over.
