Het feit dat Hendrick Jan Sanders deken en keurmeester van het weversambacht, schepen en burgemeester was, aldus Jac Heeren is een bewijs van het grote vertrouwen, dat in hem gesteld werd en als vakman en als mens (1). Ter toelichting diene, dat men als burgemeester, als schepen en als deken van een ambacht zitting had in het stadsbestuur. Voor een goed begrip dient verder vermeld te worden, dat de funktie van burgemeester destijds een geheel andere inhoud had als tegenwoordig. Jaarlijks werden er twee burgemeesters aangewezen, die belast waren met de zorg voor de stadsfinancien en het innen van de belastingen. Deze funktie was weinig geliefd, omdat men met zijn persoonlijk bezit borg stond voor het binnenkomen der belastinggelden. De burgemeester heette dan ook oorspronkelijk borgemeester, omdat hij borg stond voor het binnenkomen der balastingen. Vaak kwam het dan ook voor, dat men ijlings uit de stad vertrok, wanneer men vermoede, dat men voor het burgemeesterschap in aanmerking kwam. Niet alleen Hendrick Jan Sanders, maar ook nog zeven van zijn nakomelingen bekleedden in de loop der jaren een of meer keren het burgemeestersambt. Hieruit blijkt, dat deze tak van de familie Sanders in elk geval in goede doen moet zijn geweest, anders zou men zeker niet voor dit ambt in aanmerking zijn gekomen.
