Notes about Bernard Joseph Brunt

Bernard J. Brunt, 85, passed away Friday, September 3, 2010 at home surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born and educated in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of the late William J. and Anna (Slusarz) Brunt.

Bernie was a US Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre of Operations.

Upon his return, he enrolled at Siena College and earned his BA in economics. He later received his Master's degree in education from the State Teacher's College at New Paltz, NY. For 35 years he was a teacher and eventually chairman of the Mathematics Department in the Massapequa, NY Public School District.

Bernie was a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, South Huntington Council. A devoted family man, he was also an avid golfer; fitness swimmer; loyal fan of Siena Saints basketball and Yankees baseball; and enjoyed enhancing his love of learning through travel.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Catherine (Papariello) Brunt; his children James (Linda), Daniel (Barbara), Jeffrey (Kathleen), and Bernadette; and seven grandchildren.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9PM at D'Elia Funeral Home, Highway 70 & Vermont Ave., Lakewood, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 10, 2010 at 10:30AM at Holy Family Church followed by interment in the Brigadier William C. Doyle Veteran's Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bernie's name to Meridian Hospice Foundation 1345 Campus Parkway, Suite A2 Neptune, NJ 07753.
