13 Mar 1710 It is not clear exactly where the Goodpastures/Vollenweiders came from, but there is good circumstantial evidence that they were Protestants. There are multiple records of Jacobs and Ulrichs of this name-it was not uncommon-arriving in New York, Pennsylvania, and points South in the early to mid-18th century. There were several waves of middle European Protestants emigrating to escape religious persecution, beginning with the Huegonots from France in the 17th century. There are stories in the family that the Goodpastures were Huegenot. However, it seems clear that the anglicized name Goodpasture is a translation of the German Vollenweider. It is far more likely that a German-speaking family came in the mid-18th century. Many German and Swiss Mennonites fled Europe at that time. The place where they settled-the mountains of Western Virginia-is consistent with these Goodpastures having come with the Mennonites. Their neighbors were Scottish Highlanders who arrived at the same time and went West to what was then the frontier. Rockingham County, VA, where Jacob lived for some time, had a large population of German and Swiss Mennonites. There are records of Vollenweiders arriving in PA early in the century, when the area was still associated with the havens for religious refugees established by William Penn a generation earlier. Finding Penn’s tracts settled and land expensive, many of them headed South down the Great Wagon Road into the Valley of Virginia, settling in the Western counties where land was available. The Mennonites arrived a few years later, and gravitated to the same area. There are documented Jacob’s, Ulrich’s, etc. among both groups, and it is not possible to say when Sarah’s forebears arrived. Construction of his ancestry is conjectural, and based on undocumented stories.
