Dr. Ronald W. Tyree, 78, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm Friday, August 5, 2011 at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 5-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Outreach International or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Dr. Tyree was born Oct. 17, 1932 in Kansas City, MO, son of Clarence and Avis Gross Tyree. He graduated from North High School in Des Moines, IA and attended Graceland University in Lamoni. IA. In 1954, Ronald married Beverly Briggs in Des Moines, IA. Ron studied at the University of Iowa, receiving his BA, MA and PhD. He studied under Dr. Himie Voxman, world renowned woodwind educator. He continued his studies with Bernard Garfield, principal bassoonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and with Louis Skinner, world famous expert on bassoon reeds. Following his graduate studies at the University of Iowa, Dr. Tyree was drafted into the Army and toured Europe as principal bassoonist with the U.S. 7th Army Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Tyree was an assistant professor of music at Morningside College from 1959 to 1965. While in Sioux City, he directed the Siouxland Symphony Orchestra. Beginning in 1965, Ron was Professor of Bassoon and Saxophone at the University of Iowa, serving in that role until his retirement in 1997. His students have held principal chairs in professional orchestras in the US, Mexico, Venezuela and Germany. Others have been professors of bassoon and saxophone in American universities. Dr. Tyree held professional memberships with the Double Reed Society, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, the Galpin Society and the Iowa Bandmasters Association. As a guest soloist, he appeared with the Dubuque Symphony and the Cedar Rapids Symphony, the Cedar Rapids Opera, the Quad Cities Symphony, the University of Iowa Sinfonietta and the Iowa City Municipal Band. He performed regularly with the Quad Cities Symphony as principal bassoonist for 37 years. He also performed with the Iowa Woodwind Quintet, the Iowa Reed Trio and the Iowa Saxophone Quartet. Following his retirement, Dr. Tyree continued to perform with the River Cities Saxophone Quartet. He was a member of the Community of Christ congregation in Coralville and held the office of Evangelist. He also directed church choirs and musical groups. His faith and the expression of music when he performed revealed the deeply spiritual person that he was. His hobbies included photography and travelling to 24 countries. He enjoyed going to Minnesota every summer to fish, and appreciated all the beauties of nature wherever he went. Survivors include his wife...; one brother...; four grandchildren...; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson Dawson Tyree.
