Voor zijn afkomst kunnen we daarnaast een beroep doen op de Goudse retroacta (doop-,
trouw- en begraafboeken), belastingkohieren en notariële akten. Daaruit valt af te leiden
dat Cornelis de Jager in Gouda werd geboren als zoon van Jan Florisz. de Jager en
Martigen Jansdr. van Souburgh. Zijn ouders traden op 20 november 1605 in het huwelijk voor de schepenen van het stedelijke gerecht,7 waar alle niet-gereformeerden terecht
konden voor hun echtverbintenis. Korte tijd later, op 24 april 1606, kocht het pasgetrouwde stel een groot huis aan de Westhaven, de belangrijkste gracht van Gouda (perceel nummer 25).8 Hieruit blijkt dat Jan Florisz. de Jager en/of zijn vrouw stamden uit
vermogende families. Hij had al voor zijn huwelijk een aanstelling verworven als secretaris van de stad Gouda en zijn naam prijkt dan ook onder vele officiële documenten
van het stadsbestuur. Daarnaast trad hij ook op als advocaat en notaris.9
Alles wijst erop dat Jan Florisz. de Jager en zijn gezinsleden rooms-katholiek waren
