Questionable Parents
Questionable Relationships
The parents of Thomas Hopton have been indicated as being Thomas Hopton and Joanne Mortimer Hopton however the evidence does not seem to support this relationship. An unsourced pedigree online at geni.com does indicate that the father of Sir Thomas Hopton 1388-1445 is Thomas Hopton 1362-1387 (Note: death date is before son's birth date), Thomas Hopton 1362-1387 is indicated as the son of Walter Hopton b 1337. [3] This Geni.com pedigree however is unsourced and the dates are questionable. The proposed parental relationship, of Thomas Hopton 1362-1387 and Joanne Mortimer Hopton to Thomas Hopton (Hopton-2) is questionable and not supported by the evidence.
Probable Parents
Walter Hopton b 1335, is also indicated as the father of Thomas Hopton 1399-1445. Our Royal, Titled, Noble, and Commoner Ancestors & Cousins, Page 644, Compiler: Mr. Marlyn Lewis, citing Douglas Richardson, Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd Edition, does not give a birth date for Walter but does list two sons, Thomas Hopton, b 1399 d 1445, and Walter Hopton d 1412. If these dates are accurate Sir Walter Hopton would have been about 64 at the time Sir Thomas Hopton was born. Walter's wife, Joane Le Yonge b orn 1342 wuld have been about 57 years of age. This places the dates in question.
Evidence
One of the earliest records found in the National Archive for Thomas Hopton. dated 1420 indicates that '"Thomas son of Walter Hopton," witnessed a charter of Thomas Newport, of Ercallowe [4] In another reference, Thomas Hopton is named as the son of Walter Hopton, when he witnesses a 1420 deed transaction between this same Thomas Newport of Ercallowe and Nicholas Pisbale,. [5]
Resolution
Based on the available evidence Thomas Hopton and Joanne Mortimer Hopton have been removed as parents of Thomas Hopton. Based on evidence from Douglas Richardson's , Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd Edition, and other reliable sources, Walter Hopton and Joane Young (Le Younge) have been added as the parents of Thomas Hopton.
Marriage
Husband: Thomas Hopton
Wife: Eleanor Lucy
Child: Elizabeth Hopton
Marriage: 1433, Hopton, Suffolk, England. Source: #S255
Note: The 1433 marriage date is found in a number of online pedigrees however the 1427 birth date of Elizabeth Hopton puts this date in question. Marlyn Lewis, citing Douglas Richardson, Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd Edition, places their marriage date as c 1425. [6]
Social Rank
In a 2013 post to gen-medieval @rootsweb.com titled, "Subject: C.P. Addition: Thomas Hopton, Esq., of Hopton, Shropshire, and his 2nd wife, Alice", Douglas Richardson writes to the newsgroup on the question of Thomas Hopton's social rank, and in particular his status as a Knight. In his post he notes the following from "Burke, History of the Commoners 4 (1838): p. 172 gives a pedigree of the Hopton family, which reads as follows: "Sir Thomas Hopton, knt. = Eleanor, daughter of Sir Walter Lucy, of Newington Lucy." END OF QUOTE. Richardson goes on to say, "The question remains: Did Thomas Hopton hold the rank of esquire or was he a knight? Or was he simply a gentleman? '
After documentary exploration of this question, Douglas Richardson sums up his post by saying, "As to Thomas Hopton's social rank, I note that Thomas Hopton is called "esquire" in 1450 and again in 1465 following his death. As such, it is clear that he was never knighted. His social rank was esquire. [7]
