Hij staat bekend onder de naam van "Roel Krukje" en was bewoner van "’t Heeghiem" te Garijp. Het huis staat er nog, alleen was er vroeger een zeer grote schuur achter; onder het huis zijn nog grote kelders aanwezig. Hij was bekend om zijn grote kracht b.v. als een herberg ontruimd moest worden, werd hij opgehaald; hij was gastvrij, maar elk die bij hem logies kwam vragen, moest eerst met hem worstelen; hij was kunstzinnig, schreef mooi (er moeten nog nieuwjaarswensen zijn door hem met de ganzenpen geschreven), zong mooi, werd aangezocht als voorzanger voor de school, maar bedankte. Deze Roel Jans moest loten voor het Franse leger en zou in Rusland een been hebben verloren, maar dit werd niet beschreven.
