Notes about Rev Thomas James SANDERSON

History

An indenture dated 24th January 1902 details the sale of the land and buildings from the estate of the late Rev Thomas James Sanderson of Brington, Hunts, to Thomas Charles George (farmer), Alfred Morris (skivehand) and Thomas Allen (labourer) being the trustees of the Chelveston-cum-Caldecott Working Mens Club and Institute, registered as a Working Mens Club under the Friendly Societies Act 1896, for the sum of £300.

The buildings included a bakehouse and baker’s shop. In a later indenture dated 8th April 1908, the trustees Charles Holyoak, William Campion and Herbert Watts sold these to Henry Edward Disbrowe Wise (last Lord of the Manor).

The club was admitted to the Union of Working Mens Clubs on 3rd March 1900 and left in August 1984.

The Public Entertainment licence of 1986 shows it was registered to hold 75 persons.

The club is now closed and is a private dwelling.

Large Roman villa of courtyard type.

Roman villa, some thirty years back or so a farmer uncovered in a
meadow near Huntingfield manor house as it stands today a very fine
Roman villa etc. Maybe you have notes of it? That's later of course
than the 1881 find. [V.T.C.10.infra]

"Litlington: Courtyard type(?). The villa at Litlington----, situated
near the Manor Farm, south of the church, is said to have contained
'30 rooms & a bath' (a). It was clearly a house of some pretensions
and had at least one mosaic pavement; if the plan shown on the map
acompanying the report by Keipe (b) of the Litlington Cemetery be
approx. accurate, it was of the developed courtyard type with
rooms on all four sides: the external dimensions of the rectangle
being not less than 500' x 300'! The village was of some importance,
or the villa with its dependent dwellings very extensive; for the
existence of R. house sites in the immediate neighbourhood has
since been reported on three separate occasions (in 1850 (c):
1881 (a) & (d): in 1913 (c))."

Extensive remains of a R.villa were lately disturbed at Litlington,
Cambs.
The pavements were unfortunately destroyed by the curiosity of the
uninformed but the curate of Steeple Morden was enabled to make
drawings of the most highly ornamented, & has removed one to a
coach-house in Pembroke Lane, Cambridge, belonging to the Eagle Inn."

"At a meeting of the Cambridge Autiquarian Society (May 6, 1841),
the late Rev. W. Clack exhibited coloured drawings of a tesselated
pavement found in a Roman villa at Litlington (a) & at another
meeting (Dec 6, 1841) he gave an account of his whole proceedings
in the exploration of the villa, which consisted of more than 30
rooms & a bath. (b). It was situated between the Ashwell Street &
Litlington Church & the examination of it was mostly made in the
year 1829 (c). Unfortunately Mr Clack's collections were sold in
Devonshire, & cannot now be traced."

Kempe's plan is very sketchy, has no scale & appears to be wrongly
oriented, but suggests that the O.S. symbol for villa is a approx.
on the south edge of this building.

"... Litlington, where excavations conducted by the late Dr Webb
have in past years yielded a rich harvest of Roman remains to the
collection of our Society" Coin (ae 2) of Nero found 1878 "in a
cottager's garden at Litlington"... "The discovery at Litlington,
in Jan 1881, of a Roman mosaic pavement & hypocaust, in a garden
next to the site of Dr Webb's excavations, has been announced
by the Rev. T. J. Sanderson, Vicar of the Parish."

Excursion to Litlington on 12 June 1913, to inspect "the remains
of a Roman villa lately uncovered by Mr Mclaren at the Manor Farm.
Several portions of the villa were visible, among which may be
mentioned some well-preserved remains of the bath .... Mr Mclaren
intends to continue the excavation." [This is presumably the excav.
referred to in T.C. 3 supra]

'Excavations at Litlington ... have disclosed the remains of a
Roman villa with beautifully-tiled & marbled floors in mosaic
work, & some pottery & coins. In 1829 a 30-roomed villa was found
in the same village, & in 1887 [SIC] another villa was unearthed"
[Obs: this cannot be the same as the 1829 find, as the mosaics then
found were destroyed a removed - V.T.C. 6 SUPRA]

'Numerous [R] coins found at Litlington" - some in oxford &
Cambridge Museums.

The scale & number of the buildings - unless there is some duplicationof sites chosen for excavn - coupled with the proximity of the
large walled cemetery to the south [TL 34 SW 3] suggest that this
may turn out to be more than a villa.

The site of the villa is under pasture and has been undisturbed
for some years. The present farmer said that no finds have been made
recently.(1-10)
