In 1794 Hendrik’s wife died. She was buried at Groot Constantia in the walled family graveyard. The ageing Hendrik left Groot Constantia soon afterwards to live at Nooitgedacht with his bachelor son, Johan Gerhard (1760-1805) . From then on his younger son, Hendrik Cloete junior, took charge of Groot Constantia and it was he who henceforth acted as host to visitors. 
Five years later, on 11 November 1799, Hendrik senior died at Nooitgedacht, aged 74. He was initially buried there, but on 15 November 1799 was reinterred at Groot Constantia.
