Notes about Maria "Steijn" Steyn b1c1 SM

{geni:about_me} Among the Cape inventories, is one for Maria Steijn:

------------------------

Reference no.: MOOC8/4.70

22 November 1724

deceased is Maria Steijn - her heirs are her surviving husband Hermanus Kriel and her daughter Maria Kriel - the inventory and valuation has been made in the presence of the child's grandfather Jacobus Steijn.

This tells us that the Maria Steijn who married Hermanus Kriel was the daughter of Jacobus Steijn

----------------------------------------------------------

Maria STEYN *1707 was the first child of Jacobus 'Jacob' STEYN and Maria POTGIETER.

She is sometimes confused with another Maria STEYN supposedly *1695 who is listed in some genealogies as a daughter of Douwe Gerbrandt STEYN and Maria LOZEE.

----------------------------------------------------------

According to the most reliable sources, this second Maria Steyn was not a daughter of Douwe Gerbrandt STEYN and Maria STEYN (LOZEE). There is no proof that she actually existed. Thanks to Richard Ball for the following information:

The will of DGS names only four heirs (erfgenaame) his wife and three children:

that is -

his wife Maria Lozee

his son Aage Steijns by a previous wife (voorsoon)

the son of his wife, Jacobus Steijns, presumably by another man (voorsoon)

his daughter by his present wife (specifically stated), Anna

Almost certainly this means that he had no other living heirs at that time - Roman Dutch law did not permit a parent to omit any of his or her children from inheriting - we can therefore, barring other evidence to the contrary, assume that at the time he made his will his only children were Aage and Anna (and possibly also Jacobus, though it seems very odd that he did not name him as one of his children if he was indeed the father).

In DeVilliers / Pama, Hermanus Steyn (see above) is assumed to have been a child of Jacobus, as is Maria (also a Paulus) - no source or reasons given.

Chris Steyn adds: In Die Families van Ou Swellendam Deel I STEYN, there is a list of the children of DGS on page 2. Maria is not mentioned as a child of DGS.
