Theobald de Blois, Comte de Champagne et Brie
Gender:
Male
Birth:
May 13, 1179
Troyes, Aube, Champagne-Ardenne, France
Death:
May 24, 1201 (22)
Troyes, Aube, Champagne-Ardenne, France
Immediate Family:
Son of Henri I de Blois 'le Libâ©ral', count of Champagne & Brie and Marie Capet de France, comtesse de Champagne
Husband of Blanche de Navarre, comtesse consort de Champagne
Father of Blanca de Champagne and Teobaldo I el Cantautor, rey de Navarra
Brother of Henri 'le Jeune' de Champagne, comte de Champagne; Scholastique de Champagne and Marie de Champagne
Theobald III (French: Thibaut; 13 May 1179 ·Äì 24 May 1201) was Count of Champagne from 1197 to his death.
Theobald was the younger son of Henry I of Champagne and Marie, a daughter of Louis VII of France and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He succeeded as Count of Champagne in 1197 upon the death of his older brother Henry II.
Charters were written by him and Philip Augustus in September 1198 to dictate the rights of the Jews of the one vis-à-vis the other and to repay debts by Augustus to the count of Champagne for the employment of his Jews. These laws were reinforced subsequently in charters that were signed between 1198 and 1231.
In 1198, Pope Innocent III called the Fourth Crusade. There was little enthusiasm for the crusade at first, but on November 28, 1199 various nobles of France gathered at Theobald's court for a tournament (in his Ecry-sur-Aisne's castle), including the preacher Fulk of Neuilly. There, they "took the cross," and elected Theobald their leader, but he died the next year and was replaced by Boniface of Montferrat.
Theobald married Blanche of Navarre on July 1, 1199 at Chartres, and was succeeded by his posthumous son by Blanche of Navarre, Theobald IV. She was Theobald's dower thus receiving his seven castles (Epernay, Vertus, Sâ©zanne, Chantemerle, Pont-sur-Seine, Nogent-sur-Seine and Mâ©ry-sur-Seine, and all the subsidiaries coming from these castles and castellaries at the Count's death. On May 24, 1201, she was to rule as regent for the following 21 years, during which the succession was contested by Theobald's nieces, Alice and Philippa.
He was buried beside his father at the Church of Saint Stephen, built at Troyes by the latter. On his tomb the inscriptions are:
Intent upon making amends for the injuries of the Cross and the land of the Crucified He paved a way with expenses, an army, a fleet. Seeking the terrestrial city, he finds the one celestial; While he is obtaining his goal far away, he finds it at home.

THIBAUT de Blois, son of EUDES II Comte de Blois & his second wife Ermengarde d'Auvergne ([1010]-29/30 Sep 1089, bur Epernay).¬â The Liber Modernorum Regum Francorum names "Tetbaudus et Stephanus" as the two sons of Comte Eudes, specifying that Thibaut succeeded in "Carnotensem et Turonensem"[146].¬â The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Theobaldi filii Odonis Campaniensis" when recording that he lost Tours in 1041[147].¬â "Odo comes filius [Odonis comitis]" confirmed a donation of his father by charter dated to [1032/37], subscribed by "Tetbaldi filii eius, matris eius Ermengardis·Ä¶Hervei vicecomitis"[148].¬â He succeeded his father in 1037 as THIBAUT III Comte de Blois, de Chartres, de Châ¢teaudun, de Meaux, de Sancerre et de Troyes.¬â He lost Beauvais some time after 1037.¬â Guillaume de Jumiâ®ges records that "comitem Tetbaldum" was captured by Geoffroy Comte d'Anjou who extorted the town of Tours from him by force[149].¬â The Chronica Rainaldi records that "Tetbaldus, filius Odonis comitis" was captured by "Goffrido comite Andecavorum" in 1044 after which the city of Tours surrendered[150].¬â Comte de Bar-sur-Aube, presumably after 1077, maybe de iure uxoris.¬â The necrology of Saint-Pâ®re-en-Vallâ©e records the death "II Kal Oct" of "Tebaldus comes Carnotensium"[151].¬â The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records that "comes Theobaldus [filius Odonis]" was buried "apud Spernacum"[152].¬â
m firstly (repudiated 1048) as her first husband, GERSENDE du Maine, daughter of HERIBERT [I] "Euigilans Canis/Eveille-chien" Comte du Maine & his wife ---([1025/35]-).¬â The Actus pontificum Cenomannis records that "Atho marchisius" left Maine in the hands of "Gaufridi de Meduana", also naming "uxor eiusdem marchisii Garcendis·Ä¶filia Herberti Cenomannorum·Ä¶comitis·Ä¶Evigila Canem" and specifying that she had married firstly "Theobaldo duci Campanie" and that he had repudiated her[153].¬â She married secondly as his second wife, Alberto Azzo II d'Este.¬â Orderic Vitalis records that "Hugo filius Herberti" and his wife ·ÄúBertam ipsius relictam, Tedbaldi Blesensium comitis sororem·Äù had ·Äúfilium...Herbertum et tres filias·Äù, of whom one married ·ÄúAzsoni marchiso Liguri⶷Äù (which would be difficult to sustain chronologically and confuses the children of Hugues [IV] Comte du Maine with his sisters)[154].¬â
[m secondly ([1050/55]) GUNDRADA, daughter of --- (-[1055/60]).¬â Her marriage is confirmed by the charter dated 1089 under which ·ÄúStephanus comes·Äù donated property to the abbey of Pontlevoy, for the souls of ·ÄúTheobaldi comitis patris mei et matris meⶠGundre⶷Ķ·Äù[155].¬â It is assumed that she died soon after giving birth to her son.¬â Another possibility is that ·ÄúGundre⶷Äù in this charter is in fact a distorted transcription of ·ÄúGersend⶷Äù, the name of Thibaut·Äôs known first wife.¬â This cannot be verified unless another primary source emerges which names the mother of Comte Etienne.]¬â
m [secondly/thirdly] (before 1061) ADELA [Alix], daughter of --- (-12 May [1093/1100], bur Saint-Faron).¬â "Adeladis comitisse" subscribed the donation to Cluny by "Rotrocus castri Mauritanie comes atque Dunensis castri vicecomes" dated 11 Jan 1078, immediately after "Tetbaldi comitis, Stephani comitis"[156], it being assumed that she was the wife of the former not the latter.¬â Her parentage is uncertain.¬â According to the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines, "Alaydis soror sancti Symonis" married "comiti Campanie Theobaldo", although Alberic confuses her with her supposed niece Adelais, daughter of Hâ©ribert [IV] Comte de Vermandois, saying that she married "Hugoni fratri regis Philippi" after the death of her husband[157].¬â If Alberic is correct, the [second/third] wife of Comte Thibaut III was Adela [Alix] de Valois, daughter of Raoul [III] de Crâ©py Comte du Vexin et de Valois & his first wife Aelis de Bar-sur-Aube.¬â The difficulty with Alberic·Äôs statement is an undated charter, quoted by Acta Sanctorum, under which "Rodulfus comes" [identified as Comte Raoul [III]] donated property to Saint-Râ©my, confirmed by "Symonem filium meum, duos quoque generos meos, quos de filiabus meis habeo, id est Heribertum comitem et juvenem·Ä¶Bartholomeum"[158].¬â If the wife of Thibaut III Comte de Blois had been another daughter of Comte Raoul [III], it is unclear why Thibaut would have been omitted from this document which appears to indicate clearly that Raoul had only two sons-in-law.¬â Nevertheless, a close relationship with the family of the comtes de Valois is indicated by a charter dated to [1077/81] under which "Teobaudus comes palatinus·Ä¶cum mulierum Adelaide" donated property to Montiâ©render, naming "bone memorie predecessorum·Ä¶patris sui Odonis comitis et Heriberto cognomento senioris·Ä¶comes Rodulfus predecessor suus et propinquus"[159], the latter presumably referring to Comte Raoul [III].¬â In addition, Comte Thibaut acquired the county of Bar-sur-Aube.¬â If he had not been Raoul·Äôs son-in-law, the basis for this acquisition is unclear.¬â The necrology of Saint-Loup, Troyes records the death "XII Mai" of "Aalais uxor Theobaudi comitis Campaniâ¶" and her burial "in monasterio Sancti Faronis"[160].¬â
Comte Thibaut III & his [second] wife had one child:‰
1.¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ¬â ETIENNE [Henri] de Blois (-killed in battle Ramleh 19 May 1102).¬â The Liber Modernorum Regum Francorum names (in order) "Stephanus et Hugo" as sons of "comes Tetbaudus", specifying that Etienne "factus est Blesensium Carnotensium atque Meldensium comes" on their father's death[161].¬â ·ÄúStephanus comes·Äù donated property to the abbey of Pontlevoy, for the souls of ·ÄúTheobaldi comitis patris mei et matris meⶠGundre⶷Ķ·Äù by charter dated 1089[162].¬â As noted above, it is possible that ·ÄúGundre⶷Äù in this charter is in fact a distorted transcription of ·ÄúGersend⶷Äù, the name of Thibaut·Äôs known first wife.¬â This cannot be verified unless another charter emerges which names the mother of Comte Etienne.¬â He succeeded his father in 1089 as ETIENNE Comte de Blois, de Chartres, de Châ¢teaudun, de Sancerre et de Meaux.¬â ¬â ¬â
