REDE, Edward (by 1476-1544), of Norwich, Norf; b by 1476, 3rd s. of John Rede of Norwich by Joan Ludlowe. m. (1) Elizabeth Lyston alias London; (2) a da. of William Stanley, prob. of Beccles, Suff., 3s. 2da.; (3) Isold Woodles (d. 13 Sept. 1523), wid. of Thomas Wemble of Harwich, Essex, 1da.; (4) Anne Cranmer, 1s.1
Biography
Edward Rede, mercer, was admitted a freeman of Norwich on 3 May 1497, during his father·Äôs mayoralty, and elected to the common council five years later. In the year before his death he served for the third time as mayor and in the intervening 40 years he had filled nearly every office in the city, some of them repeatedly. In 1516 he was threatened with expulsion for his ·Äòmonstrous contumelies·Äô if he did not submit to the mayor; he evidently did so and in 1519 9 was himself a candidate for the mayoralty. Two years later he achieved the office and found himself responsible for the city·Äôs affairs at a critical point in its dispute with the prior of the cathedral. Between October 1520 and May 1521 he rode four times to London on this business and in 1524 he was one of those who bound the city to submit to Wolsey·Äôs judgment.3 ...
... Rede was probably approaching 70 when he was elected mayor for the third and last time. A few months after his term had ended, on 25 Oct. 1544, he made his will and he died the next day. He asked to be buried in St. Peter Mancroft ဘby my beloved wifeမ and ordered 100 masses to be said for his soul at or soon after his funeral. He left houses to provide money for St. Peterမs bell to be rung for 20 years and his house in St. Peterမs parish to his son. His other property in Norfolk and Suffolk he left to his wife for life, as well as £100 and jewels, apparel and household stuff. The reversion of the land and some of the movables went to his second son. Peter Rede, Augustine Steward (his nieceမs husband), John Sutton and John Rede were named executors and John Corbet II supervisor.6

Family
According to this biography (with sources cited) he had four wives.
1. Elizabeth Lyston (aka London)
2. a da. of William Stanley, prob. of Beccles, Suff., 3s. 2da.
3. Isold Woodles (d. 13 Sept. 1523), wid. of Thomas Wemble of Harwich, Essex, 1da.
4. Anne Cranmer, 1s.
No children by his 1st wife.
By his 2nd wife, Izod, daughter of William Stanley, son of Humphrey Stanley. She died 1524, and was buried in the Cathedral of Norwich, he had three sons: John, William and Peter; and two daughters: Margaret (married Robert Cage); and Elizabeth (married Jeffrey Loveday).
Ursula, who married four times, was the daughter of Edward Rede and his third wife, Isabel Woodlesse.
His son by fourth wife Ann Cramer was called Francis and died young.
