Walter, Count of Teisterbant, in the Dukedom of Gelders, District of the Betuwe, died either 724 or 742 (Oudheusden, 2; Anderson, Table 347; Betham, Table 562). His daughter and heiress, Beatrix, Countess of Teisterbant, married about 711, Theodoric, Stadtholder and Lord of Cleve (Ibid.). Their daughter and heiress, Beatrix, Countess of Teisterbant, married after the death of both her parents to Elias, Aelius, or Elius Grail, Gralius, Graielis, or Grajus, a great hero, Stadtholder of Nijmegen and first Count of Cleve, She died 734 or 5 (Ibid.). Grafschaft Kleve [edit] Beginnings of the Grafschaft [edit] There is almost no reliable information about the local balance of power in the area of "Kleve" in the early Middle Ages. The few statements made by some historians on this are also controversial. According to one of these sources, after 711 a daughter from a noble family named Beatrix married Count Aelius (or Helios) Gralius, who was a follower of Karl Martell. This count owned areas in the Teisterbant area as a fief. The son from this marriage was as Theodoric I from 742 both Count von Teisterbant and the first Count of Cleve. Counties Teisterbant and Cleve were divided among the descendants. The last descendant of this noble family in Cleve was Count Nufried, after whose death this family became extinct in 1008. A "Beatrix" from a noble house is also mentioned in a legend or fairy tale as the ancestor of the Counts of Kleve, who married a swan knight Elias. By the 15th century at the latest, the Klever counts and dukes derived their origins from this swan knight Elias (Aelius = Elias?), Who is related to the figure of Lohengrin. [3]
