Biographical Summary from Darryl Lundy's Peerage
John Stuart, 1st Earl of Lennox was born before 1430. He was the son of Sir Alan Stuart of Darnley and Catherine Seton. He married Margaret Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie and Margaret Boyd, on 15 May 1438, by indenture, with both parties being underage. He died between 8 July 1495 and 11 September 1495. John Stuart, 1st Earl of Lennox gained the title of Lord Darnley. He gained the title of 1st Earl of Lennox.
    Biographical Summary by Medieval Lands
JOHN Stewart, son of ALAN Stewart of Darnley & his wife Catherine Seton ([8 Jul/11 Sep] 1495). Lord Darnley 1460. Lord Darnley claimed the Earldom of Lennox in 1473, as the heir of Elizabeth daughter of Duncan Earl of Lennox, whom he claimed (wrongly it appears) was the Earl's second daughter. The claim was disputed by John Haldane of Gleneagles, whose wife was descended from Elizabeth's older sister Margaret, in whose favour the king and the Lords of the Council found 12 Jan 1476. However, a settlement was presumably reached as Lord Darnley eventually took his seat in the parliament of 1488 as Earl of Lennox. m (1438) MARGARET Montgomerie, daughter of ALEXANDER Lord Montgomerie & his wife Margaret Boyd of Kilmarnock. John & his wife had nine children.

John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox (b. bef. 1430, d. 8 Jul/11 Sep 1495) was known as Lord Darnley and the Earl of Lennox. Stewart was the son of Catherine Seton and Sir Alan Stuart, a great-great-great-grandson of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland.
His marriage has been a source of genealogical confusion. He is recorded as having contracted to marry Margaret, the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie, and Margaret Boyd, by indenture on 15 May 1438 as both parties were under age. She, however, appears to have died young. Ultimately, he married Margaret Montgomerie in 1460, who was not the same individual, but her fraternal niece, daughter of Alexander, Master of Montgomerie, by his wife Elizabeth Hepburn.
John and Margaret Montgomerie had nine recorded children:
    Lady Marion Stuart.
    Robert Stuart, 4th Seigneur d'Aubigny, b. c. 1470, d. 1544.
    Sir John Stewart, Seigneur d'Oison, b. bef. 1446, d. c. 1512.
    Elizabeth Stuart, b. bef. 1476.
    Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox, b. bef. 5 May 1488, d. 9 Sep 1513, Flodden.
    Sir William Stewart, Seigneur d'Oison, b. bef. 1495, d. bef. 1504.
    Alexander Stewart, b. bef. 1495, d. bef. 1509.
Lady Janet Stewart, who married Ninian Ross, 3rd Lord Ross of Halkhead[1]
Lady Elizabeth Stewart, b. bef. 1495.
