Aubrey de Vere I gave distinguished service at the Battle of Hastings, and was awarded land near Northampton to build a manor house. In the early thirteenth century, Sir Walter de Vere dropped the ·Äúde Vere·Äù family name, and assume the surname ·ÄúDrayton·Äù. The core of the house was built by Sir Simon de Drayton around 1300 and still survives.
Note this information comes from Wikipedia, which cites a book about houses and gardens in South Carolina: Magnolia Plantation and Gardens By Derek Fell. Giibs Smith. 2009. There could not be a less reliable source for a medieval connection between the Draytons and de Veres. The more reliable Buildings of England: Northamptonshire by Nikolaus Pevsner says nothing about a connection.
