Johan I van Arkel (* 990, ဠ 1034) from the first house van Arkel was lord of the land van Arkel, Heukelom and Polsbroek.

Life: Johan I van Arkel was the son of Mr Foppe van Arkel and Maria van Oyen. Johan married Elisabeth van Cuyk (about 1010 - about 1030), daughter of Willem van Cuyk. Around 1020 Johan built the church of Leerbroek. He moved as a pilgrim to the Holy Land, then went to Byzantine services and fought in the campaigns against the Seljuk Turks and against the Mirdasiden in Aleppo. In an ambush in Syria Johan died in 1034.
