[Burke's Peerage]

BARONY OF FURNIVALLE (II, 3)
THOMAS (DE FURNIVALLE), LORD FURNIVALLE, son and heir, by 1st wife. He married, 24 February 1317/8 Joan, widow of John DE MOUNTAGU (son and heir apparent of Sir William DE MOUNTACU), and 1st daughter and coheir of Sir Theobald DE VERDON, of Alton, co. Stafford [LORD VERDON], by his 1st wife, Maud daughter of Sir Edmund DE MORTEMER, of Wigmore, co. Hereford [LORD MORTEMER]. On 7 September 1318 the King took his fealty, and he and his wife had livery of the castle of Alton with its members, valued at £29 11s 4d. a year. On 29 November following they had livery of her purparty of two-thirds of her father's knights' fees in England, and the Chancellor of Ireland was ordered to assign her purparty of two-thirds of her father's lands, knights' fees, and advowsons, in Ireland. Owing to disputes among the coheirs, the lands late of Theobald in England were resumed into the King's hand, 5 February 1327/8, but the castle of Alton was committed to Thomas de Furnivalle, to hold during pleasure, 10 February following. On 16 October 1328 the King took the homage of Thomas, and he and his wife had livery of the castle of Alton with its members, valued at £58 15s. 7d. a year, which the King had assigned to them as Joan's purparty of her father's lands. On 24 October 1331 the Chancellor of Ireland was ordered to divide the lands late of Theobald de Verdon in that country into four equal parts, and to give livery to the coheirs of their purparties. Owing to further disputes, new extents were order to be made of the lands late of Theobald in England, and these lands were again resumed into the King's hand, 19 February 1331/2, and finally partitioned in Chancery, Friday after St. Gregory [13 March] following, and Thomas and Joan had livery of her purparty, viz., the castle of Alton with its members, now valued at £95 19s. 11d. a year, 26 March 1332. He was aged 40 and more at his father's death. On 6 June 1332 the King took his homage, and he had livery of his father's lands. He was summoned to accompany the King to Ireland with as great a force as he could muster, 28 January 1331/2, and (the expedition having been postponed) 12 July 1332. He was summoned for Military Service from 20 March 1318/9 to 27 March 1335, to Councils from 30, December 1324 to 15 June 1338, and to Parliament from 25 August 1318 to 25 August 1339I, by writs directed Thome de Furnivall' or de Fournivall' (with the addition, during his father's lifetime, of juniori), whereby he is held to have become, in 1318, LORD FURNIVALLE.
His wife, Joan, who was born at Wootton in Stanton Lacy, 9 or 11 August 1303, and baptized in the church of Onibury, Salop, died at Alton, 2 October 1334, aged 31, and was buried 7 or 8 January 1334/5, in Croxden Abbey. He died at Sheffield, 5, 7, or 14 October 1339, and was buried, 29 May 1340, in Beauchief Abbey. [Complete Peerage V:583-4, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] 1622
